Lunar Reflections Reveal Earth's Surface
Reflections of the Earth seen on the moon could help identify surface features on planets orbiting nearby stars, an Australian researcher says.
Astrophysicist Sally Langford, from the University of Melbourne, says the Earth's oceans and land reflect light differently when viewed on the dark side of the moon.
In a paper, published in the latest Astrobiology journal, Langford, a doctoral student, says the brightness of earthshine varies as the Earth rotates.
Earthshine is the light reflected from the day side of the Earth, which is seen as a pale glow in the darkened portion of the crescent moon.
